Short-term medical options

Short-term coverage may be an option for college students who are home for the summer, working temporary jobs, or who may experience a gap in coverage if they are no longer enrolled in a school-sponsored health plan.

Sometimes the path from point A to point B isn’t straight. There’s usually a little diversion somewhere along the way. With health insurance, that diversion can typically be easily navigated. One of the tools in my toolbox to help with navigating a zig or zag when it comes to medical coverage is a short-term limited duration insurance policy.


Short-term coverage may be an option for college students who are home for the summer, working temporary jobs, or who may experience a gap in coverage if they are no longer enrolled in a school-sponosered health plan. It may also be an option for people who have left their employment and are experiencing a temporary (or short) gap in health coverage. Short-term coverage can help during that in-between time.


Short-term coverage may also be good option for people who may be traveling within the United States and are looking for temporary health coverage for a short period of time.


What short-term coverage offers, in addition to support during a transitional time, is added flexibility. It can help individuals feel more prepared while they navigate a temporary gap in coverage and evaluate their next health insurance option.

Choosing a healthcare plan under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a personal decision, and your choice needs to reflect your unique situation. Open Enrollment for a plan under the ACA is now until Monday, December 15, for a January 1 effective date. Here is a list of some of the changes (Source: cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/hhs-notice-benefit-and-payment-parameters-2026-final-rule) you might expect to see applied to your plan of choice: Monthly plan costs could increase due to changing market conditions and adjustments to premium tax credits.
